Tim Walz and AOC play Madden on Twitch in attempt an appeal to young male voters
In an effort to secure more support from male voters before Election Day, vice-presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., played Madden NFL together on the live-streaming platform Twitch on Sunday. “Sundays are for football! Game on, AOC,” Walz wrote in a post on X. The pair jumped on the streaming service Sunday afternoon, during NFL Sunday games, to discuss the upcoming election. Ocasio-Cortez opened the session explaining that her and Walz agreed to do the live-stream a couple of weeks ago when he expressed interest in doing a game stream with her. They agreed to play Madden because he used to be a football coach, and he was familiar with the game, having played it with his children in the past. Walz and Ocasio-Cortez also talked about the importance of access to Social Security, bonding over their mutual losses of their dads when they were teenagers. “Gov. Tim Walz and I both lost our dads when we were teenagers. A lot of people don’t know that Social Security also helps you if you lose a spouse (or parent, if you’re a kid). It’s so important we defend and expand it,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X following the live stream. During a campaign rally in North Carolina earlier this month, Walz claimed that his mother has to wait for her social security check every month to feed herself and that Trump and all his “rich friends” don’t care or even worry about Social Security. “When my mom looks for that Social Security deposit to be made in her bank account, that’s how she’s going to feed herself. That’s how she’s going to get things done. He [Trump] doesn’t give a damn if his Social Security check comes or not,” Walz claimed. Edgar Allan Poe wrote that the scariest monsters are the ones which lurk within our souls. But what about the souls which lurk in the halls of Congress? The U.S. Capitol is more than 200 years old. And any building which has been around for two centuries, is stocked with legends and ghosts. This time of year, people flock to pop-up haunted houses “on the hill.” But when it comes to Washington, DC, there is only one haunted House (and Senate) on “the Hill.” So allow me to spook you with tales of the Capitol macabre as we descend into the Congressional catacombs. Four grand staircases occupy each quadrant of the Capitol. But the steps in the southwest portion of the building on the House side tell perhaps one of the most grotesque stories in Congress. 10 BEST PLACES TO CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN IN THE US, WITH SPOOKY SPOTS RANKED And we’re not talking about one of the big omnibus spending bills. Rep. William Taulbee, D-Ky., served in Congress in the late 19th Century. And just like today, the Capitol teams with journalists, chasing lawmakers for a quotation or information about legislation. But Taulbee had a problem. Reporter Charles Kincaid wrote for the Louisville Times. Kincaid penned an article about Taulbee’s dalliances titled “Kentucky’s Silver-Tongued Taulbee Caught in Flagrante or Thereabouts.” After the article, Taulbee didn’t seek reelection but stuck around in Washington, pushing various causes – long before “K Street” became a thing. But Taulbee and Kincaid would often run into one another at the Capitol. Taulbee was a lot taller than the diminutive Kincaid and would sometimes physically harass the scribe. The pen may be mightier than the sword. But it’s certainly not as powerful as a pistol. In February, 1890, the two men encountered one another near the House chamber. Kincaid produced his firearm and shot the former Congressman in the face. Taulbee bled profusely as he headed down the marble stairwell. Many lawmakers come to Washington, intent on leaving a mark on the body politic. But as it turns out, it was Taulbee’s body which left an indelible mark on the U.S. Capitol. USER’S MANUAL ON WHAT HOUSE RACES TO WATCH ON ELECTION NIGHT You see, the composition of human blood and the Georgian, white marble used to make the stairwells of the building don’t exactly mix. Splotches of Taulbee’s blood covered the staircase every few feet from the second floor to the first. Some markings look like shapes in a Rorschach test. Taulbee died the next day from his wounds. But his plasma is forever a part of the U.S. Capitol, permanently staining the staircase. As a result of his fate, Taulbee doesn’t think much of reporters. Even to this day. And it’s believed that Taulbee sometimes makes himself known by tripping members of the Congressional press corps. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Capitol in the summer of 2019. He had just met with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. However, word broke that day that the attendance-starved Tampa Bay Rays might try to work out an agreement to play some of their home games in Montreal. The Montreal Expos abandoned Canada in 2005 to become the Washington Nationals. Trudeau was a fan of the Expos. There’s even a picture of a boyish Trudeau in the stands at Olympic Stadium in Montreal with his father, late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. It would be a scoop if the younger Trudeau weighed-in on the prospects of Major League Baseball returning to Montreal. Trudeau walked down a spiral staircase not far from where Kincaid killed Taulbee. I tried to get a comment from Trudeau. But for no apparent reason, I tripped over the lip of a step and cascaded in front of the Canadian leader. I didn’t drop the microphone. I also knew that I could break my arm or hand if I tried to catch myself. REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: WITH NO GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, IT FEELS LIKE CHRISTMAS IN SEPTEMBER Fortunately, I studied martial arts for years. One of the things they teach you is how to fall. I quickly adjusted my weight so I plunged onto my right shoulder and rolled. My feet flew up in the air. This was all caught on tape by my photographer Robert Fetzer. “Oh Chad! Chad! Chad! Chad,” yelled Fetzer, as I plopped directly in front of Trudeau. I was uninjured and Trudeau extended an arm to assist me. But I had already sprang back to my feet. Alas, Trudeau didn’t answer my question about the Rays and Montreal and went on his way. But there was no logical reason why I tripped there. I’ve stood by those stairs hundreds of times. I’ve never been caught by the lip of the lower stairs. A possible explanation? Perhaps the ghost of William Taulbee saw to it that I keister over teakettle in front of the Canadian Prime Minister. But only by a whisker. It’s the legend of the demon cat. Capitol Police officers and even 19th century watchmen claim they’ve seen a phantasmic feline prowl the hallways of the Capitol before national emergencies. Especially war and assassinations. Purr-portedly. That said, no one spotted the demon cat before 9/11 or the 2021 Capitol riot. CONTINGENT ELECTIONS: WHAT THEY ARE, AND WHAT TO EXPECT IF 2024 TRIGGERS ONE Maybe the demon cat – like all cats – only has nine lives. But I can take you to a place where the demon cat is said to have walked. Go to the first floor of the “mini” Rotunda on the Senate side of the Capitol near the Old Supreme Court chamber. Bulgaria centre right leads in snap vote, fails to win majority: Exit polls
GERB party in the lead in parliamentary elections, but falls short of majority needed to end political instability. Bulgaria’s centre-right GERB party was in the lead after a parliamentary election on Sunday, an exit poll showed, but has fallen short of a majority that would put an end to the country’s political instability. The Alpha Research poll showed Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) winning 26.4 percent of the votes, while reformist We Continue the Change (PP) was seen coming second with 14.9 percent of the votes. The pro-Russia ultra-nationalist Revival party was set to come third with 12.9 percent of the vote. In the seventh such vote in four years, former conservative Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s GERB party repeated its performance in the previous ballot last June by winning between 25 and 27 percent of the vote on Sunday, according to the polls. Sunday’s election was triggered by the failure of Bulgaria’s political parties to agree on forming a coalition government after an inconclusive election on June 9. The European Union’s poorest member country has been at a standstill since 2020, when massive anti-corruption protests brought down Borisov’s cabinet. But there is a high chance that GERB will yet again struggle to find partners to govern in the country’s extremely fragmented parliament, where seven to nine parties are expected to be represented. GERB would get 74 seats in the 240-seat parliament, while PP would get 42 seats, and Revival 36 seats, according to the Alpha Research poll. “GERB has the responsibility to form a government, let’s see what they propose,” said Nikolai Denkov, former prime minister and member of the PP party. “We are going to wait for the final results.” Bulgaria needs a period of stable, well-functioning government to accelerate the flow of European Union funds into its creaking infrastructure and nudge it towards adoption of the euro. Plans to join the eurozone have already been pushed back twice because of missed inflation targets. Accession is currently slated for January 25, 2025. Compared to the last election, voter turnout appeared to have slightly increased to 35 percent one hour before the polls closed. In June, voter turnout plummeted to just 34 percent – the lowest since the end of communism. According to a recent opinion poll, about 60 percent of Bulgarians surveyed view the political deadlock as “extremely alarming”. Plight of Gaza civilians ‘unbearable’ as Israel kills over 50 in a day
UN chief Antonio Guterres says the levels of death and injury in north Gaza are ‘harrowing’ and calls plight of Palestinians ‘unbearable’. Israeli attacks have killed more than 50 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip in less than a day, most of them in the north of the enclave which has been the scene of renewed Israeli ground offensive for the past three weeks, leading the chief of the United Nations to call the plight of civilians there “unbearable”. At least 11 Palestinians were killed and dozens of others wounded after a school in northern Gaza was hit on Sunday. Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary said the school is in the middle of the Shati refugee camp, a densely populated camp in northern Gaza. “The Israeli strike killed at least eight Palestinians, including three journalists and an eight-year-old girl called Zayn al-Ghoul, who was waiting in a queue to receive biscuits from the school,” she said, adding that the death toll could climb as the number of injured was high. The Israeli military has said it was looking into the report about the strike on the school. The military added that it had killed more than 40 Hamas fighters in the Jabalia area in the past 24 hours, as well as dismantled infrastructure and located large quantities of military equipment. Hamas has not yet commented on the Jabalia strikes. Israeli military strikes on the towns of Jabalia, Beit Hanoon and Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza have so far killed about 800 people in the three-week offensive, Gaza’s Ministry of Health said. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he is “shocked by harrowing levels of death, injury and destruction” in north Gaza. “The plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in North Gaza is unbearable,” Guterres’s spokesman said. As the death toll from Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza approaches 43,000 since the start of the war on October 7, with the densely populated enclave in ruins, new ceasefire talks have begun in Doha. On Sunday, the directors of the CIA and Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency travelled to Qatar to meet Qatar’s prime minister to discuss a ceasefire agreement. Egyptian officials are also participating in the talks. Separately, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has proposed a two-day ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for Israeli captives with some Palestinian prisoners. Meanwhile, in Lebanon on Sunday, Israeli forces continued their air raids on the capital Beirut’s southern suburbs after warning residents of several neighbourhoods to leave their homes. Israeli forces also targeted southern Lebanon. At least eight people were killed and 25 injured in an Israeli air strike on the coastal city of Sidon in southern Lebanon. Lebanese officials said at least 21 people were in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon. In retaliation, Hezbollah has been launching attacks across the border into northern Israel. United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday met with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati in London but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.
